It takes teamwork to run a busy hospital or clinic. Doctors, nurses, therapists and scientists can’t do it on their own; they need the backup and skills of support staff to give patients the care and treatment they need. As a Healthcare Support Worker you might be assisting a nurse to care for a patient or a physiotherapist to deliver treatment. You could be helping to maintain the equipment used to treat patients, or working in a laboratory helping scientists to diagnose disease. These roles are a vital part of the NHS and they all offer opportunities for you to make a great contribution to this unique organisation, whilst gaining valuable skills and qualifications to help you progress in your career.
They will usually work in a hospital or health center, assisting the nursing staff to care for patients. You could be performing routine monitoring tasks, helping patients take a bath, feed or dress themselves. At times you might simply talk to them, which is a vital part of patient care. There are also opportunities for Healthcare Assistants to be trained in valuable skills such as resuscitation, taking blood, and dressing wounds.
Working as a Health Care Assistant
Health Care Assistants can work within hospital or community settings under the supervision of a qualified Health-care Practioner.
The role can be very varied depending upon the area in which you are employed.
Working alongside Nurses, for example, you will be known as a Health-care Assistant, Nursing Auxiliary or Auxiliary Nurses.
Basic Job descriptions
Senior Carer
- Allocate & facilitate care throughout the shift deploying staff. Monitoring and controlling their work to ensure patient care is provided to a high standard
- Administer nursing care in accordance with individual care plan, under instruction of nurse in charge
- Maintain staff morale, develop good communication and interpersonal relations in all departments.
- Build team spirits & motivate staff towards a high standard of care
- Assist clients in all aspects of daily living, monitoring health status and reporting relevant information to senior nurse
- Monitor and take responsibility for meal times, ensuring all clients under your care have adequate dietary intake and fluids. It is your responsibility to ensure all clients are gathered to the necessary areas for meal time
- Ensure clients rooms, clothes and belongings are maintained to satisfactory condition and each client has adequate clothing, personal toiletries chiropody and hair care is maintained on a regular basis.
- Attend staff meetings as necessary
- Be responsible for monthly assessments of clients on a routine basis
- Be responsible for standards of cleanliness & tidiness on own floor including cupboards, commodes, bathrooms, and individual client rooms
- Encourage a holistic approach to care, maintaining dignity, privacy and individuality of each client. Incorporating psychological, social & spiritual needs
- Identify areas of concern regarding care and alongside nurse in charge formulate a plan of action in order to best meet the needs of the client.
Training
- Induct new members of staff so as they become quickly effective
- Train and encourage other staff as necessary, identify staff training needs and report to senior nurse
- Recognize your own limitations and training needs, seek advice and support from senior nurse.
- Take an active role in training sessions offered to you.

Health & Safety
- Identify general mechanical problems within your floor, report faults and defects in equipment and ensuring staff in your remit also comply and are compete.
- Be aware of fire policy and evacuation procedure within the whole house.

An economic and efficient use of resources must be maintained:
- Be aware of COSHH regulations.
- In accordance with Health & Safety at work act 1974, ensure as far as it is reasonably practicable, the health & welfare of yourself, patients, staff & visitors. You are required to enforce the Health & Safety policy of the home.
- Training attendance is compulsory.
Senior Careers are responsible to oversee compliance of other Careers with health & safety requirements
The types of duties include the following:
- Washing and dressing
- Feeding
- Helping people to mobilize
- Toileting
- Bed making
- Generally assisting with patients overall comfort
- Monitoring patients conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respiration's and weight
